SOUTHERN PINES, North Carolina (DOD) –

The annals of the Golf Trip are often filled with thrilling stories of heroic finishes and sad stories of heartbreaking defeats. Competing for a prize with the gravitas of the Terrapin Travelin’ Trophy, a/k/a the Turtle, amplifies all aspects of the contest. Never was that more in evidence than in this year’s Southern Pines Invitational, when Mike “Grizzly Adams” King charged into the lead during a special Saturday intermezzo final round and held on to capture his second career Turtle. . . .  [Read more in the 2014 Dimpled Orb Digest. ]

As the curtain goes up on the Twenty Fourth Annual Golf Trip, the players are anxious to put behind them a long, cold winter. The spring of Southern Pines beckons, with the start of the Tournament just around the corner. This year’s edition could be extraordinary, as two-time defending Turtle champion Mark “Q-Ball” Kimmet goes for a three-peat. What was once imponderable is now possible following Q-Ball’s stunning defense of the New Look Turtle last year.

The field is familiar, with only one change from last year’s lineup. For reasons yet unknown, Danny “Depot Stove” Pressley will not participate in this year’s event. That means the Stove’s three-year stranglehold on the Templeton Cup will finally end. In the Stove’s absence, Norm “The Total Package” Templeton hopes finally to claim the prize that bears his name. Norm will still have to fight off Greg “Stone Cold” Goddard, Tracy “Tiger” Thompson, and perhaps others, to grab the Cup that has so long eluded him.

In Stove’s stead will be Andy “Leaf” Neely, who will make his second trip to Southern Pines, this time as Dennis “Wilford Brimley” McClane’s partner. The rest of the field stands pat, ready to make another charge for the Turtle. The updated Player Page can be viewed here.

The balance of the essential Tournament information can be found at the following links: Initial Quotas Chart; Tournament Invitation; Tournament Rules; Calcutta Invitation; Calcutta Rules; Room Assignments; and Tee Times and Pairings. The non-essential Tournament information can be found in its usual haunts by following the links at left. This year we have added a set of archive links to make browsing old stuff easier as if anyone would seriously consider doing that. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. This year could be historic, and as always will be an exciting expedition.
